This painting was inspired by a huge elm tree stump in the yard of a house I lived in. The magnificent tree was cut down due to Dutch Elm disease. The year after the tree was cut down, shoots started growing from the stump. The new growth turned the stump that I had misjudged as “lifeless” into a vibrant iteration of the former formidable tree. It made me smile every time I looked out my window, reassuring me of the indelible spirit of plants.
